Printing company gains green stamp
of approval
If you thought that caring for the environment and profitable business
do not work together, a Gloucester printing company would gladly prove
you wrong. Being green is good for business – that’s the
message from Severnprint, who are celebrating having been officially
recognised for their environmental achievements.
Severnprint has just been awarded ISO14001, the internationally recognised
standard for environmental management systems, and has been busy spreading
the green word to their customers. Local firms Ecclesiastical Insurance,
Made In Stroud and renewable energy company Ecotricity were invited
to Severnprint’s factory to see the processes in action. They
were joined by City MP, Parmjit Dhanda.
Mr Dhanda welcomed the news. Speaking at a reception to present Severnprint
with their award certificate, he commended their achievements: “It
is really encouraging to see a local firm taking such an innovative
approach to tackling environmental concerns. In addition to the benefits
for the environment, you can see that this approach clearly makes
good business sense too”.
He was also impressed that Severnprint employs a full time Environmental
Officer, Susan Morton, to look after the environmental side of the
business.
Susan was in charge of creating the environmental system. “Attaining
ISO14001 was a demanding process that required us to look at environmental
impacts across the whole of the business – everything from waste
and energy, to packaging and transport,” she said. “However,
the benefits of putting the system in place really makes our company
stand out from the crowd”.
Severnprint is only one of only a handful of printers nationwide to
have achieved ISO14001 status, and since introducing their environmental
procedures the company has made significant savings. Waste recycling
and reduction schemes have cut £15,000 a year off their costs,
and over 10% of the firm’s turnover comes from companies that
use them because of their green practices.
